A game porting studio takes a game that already runs on one platform and makes it run well on another: PC to console, console to PC, either of those to Switch, or an older title to current hardware. It is mostly an engineering job. The design is finished; the work lives in the parts of the codebase that touch the platform, like rendering, input, memory, file I/O, storefront and achievement hooks, and the certification rules each platform enforces. This page lists the studios that do that work, sorted by our internal score.

Porting looks like a recompile from the outside and almost never is. A PC build that assumes a mouse, spare memory, and fast storage has to be reworked for a controller, a fixed memory budget, and a console's I/O rules. Performance is the usual sink: holding a stable frame rate on a Switch or a base console can mean changing how the game streams assets, not just lowering settings. Budget for that instead of treating the port as a button press.

What to check before you hire

Ask what the studio has shipped, on which platforms, and whether they ran certification themselves. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo each enforce their own technical checklists and submission process, and a studio that has passed cert before saves you weeks of resubmissions. If they have only done PC-to-PC work, a first console cert is a learning curve you are paying for.

Sort out access and rights early. Most ports need full engine and source access, so settle the NDA and IP assignment before you hand over the codebase, and confirm finished work transfers back to you on payment. If your game leans on middleware or third-party plugins, check each one is licensed for the target platform. That is a common and expensive surprise late in a port.

What porting costs

Porting is billed as engineering time, so the programming ranges apply, per hour: $35-60 entry, $60-120 mid, and $120-250 senior. Most real port work needs mid-to-senior engineers. The total swings on how far apart the platforms are and how cleanly the original was built. A well-architected PC game moving to one console is contained; a decade-old engine moving to mobile with a 30 fps target can cost more than some of the original features did.

Take a fixed bid only after the studio has seen your code, because a blind quote is a guess. For worked examples across disciplines see our cost guide and the deeper game porting guide. To shortlist studios, use the full directory and filter by service and engine.

Market rates & directory snapshot

Two quick reference points before you shortlist: what studios charge per hour by discipline, and how the directory breaks down by region and service. The rates come from our published game outsourcing costs guide (or estimate your own with the rate calculator); the studio counts are first-party figures from our July 2026 directory of 429 studios across 53 countries.

PORTING

Frequently asked questions

What does a game porting studio do?

It takes a finished game and makes it run well on a new platform, reworking rendering, input, memory, storefront hooks, and anything that has to pass the target platform's certification. The design is already done, so porting is mostly engineering.

How much does it cost to port a game?

Porting is billed as engineering time: roughly $35-60/hour entry, $60-120 mid, and $120-250 senior, with most work needing mid-to-senior engineers. The total depends on how different the platforms are and how cleanly the original was built, so get a fixed bid only after the studio reviews your code.

Does the studio handle platform certification?

Some do and some do not, so ask directly. A studio that has passed Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo certification before will run submission for you and save weeks of resubmissions. First-time cert on a new platform is slower and riskier.

Which studios are best for game porting and remasters?

Porting and remastering are engineering jobs, so the best studios are the ones that have shipped ports on your exact target hardware and run platform certification themselves. 10 of the 429 studios in this directory list porting as a service. Ask which titles they ported, from which platform to which, and whether they passed Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo cert without a resubmission.

Which studios port and remaster games across platforms?

Studios that list porting handle PC to console, console to PC, either of those to Nintendo Switch, and older titles to current hardware. In this directory 309 studios cover PC, 218 PlayStation, 218 Xbox, 130 Nintendo Switch, and 237 Android; 10 list porting specifically. Filter for porting plus your destination platform, since console experience does not transfer between vendors.

Who handles high-quality game ports across platforms?

A high-quality port holds a stable frame rate and passes certification, rather than just compiling on the new hardware. The studios that deliver that have platform-specific optimization experience, meaning they rework asset streaming, memory budgets, and input instead of lowering settings. Ask for frame-rate figures from a shipped port on the same hardware, and take a fixed bid only after they have read your code.

Which studios are best for game porting and co-development?

Few studios do both well, so check which one is the real specialty. Porting is contained platform engineering against a finished design; co-development means their engineers work in your codebase and sprint board on unfinished features. In this directory 10 studios list porting and 10 list co-development. If you need both, buy the port as a fixed scope and the co-dev seats separately.
