A game design studio is hired to decide how a game works, not just to build it. That covers systems design (economies, progression, combat maths), level and encounter design, and the documentation that lets everyone else implement the same game. It is the discipline teams outsource last and most nervously, because design is where a title's identity lives — which is exactly why the scope has to be drawn tightly before anyone signs. This page lists the studios in this directory that tag game design, sorted by our internal score.

Design work splits into two very different purchases. Consulting is a senior designer reviewing what you already have and telling you why the retention curve dips at day three; it is bought in days or weeks and priced hourly. Production design is a designer or small team owning a system, a level set or a whole vertical slice end to end; it is bought in months and priced like any other production discipline. Studios that are strong at one are often mediocre at the other, so ask which of the two a portfolio credit actually was.

What to check before you hire

Ask for shipped titles where the studio owned a named system, and ask what the design looked like before they touched it. A designer who improved a live game's retention has evidence; a designer who wrote a document that was never implemented does not. Request a design doc sample, redacted if necessary — the quality of the writing is the quality of the thinking, because a design nobody can implement is not a design.

Settle two things in the contract that art and code contracts rarely need. First, IP: design ideas are harder to assign cleanly than assets, so make written assignment on payment explicit and cover documentation, prototypes and iterations. Second, decision rights: name who has final say when your team and theirs disagree, because unlike an art brief there is no objective "matches the reference" test for a design call.

What game design outsourcing costs

Design is billed at the higher end of the discipline ranges because seniority is the whole product. Typical market rates run roughly $50-90 per hour for a mid-level designer and $90-200 for a senior or lead, with consulting engagements often priced as a day rate instead. These are editorial market ranges published on this site, not quotes from any listed studio.

Buy a paid audit first — one or two weeks of a senior designer reviewing your build and returning written recommendations. It is cheap relative to a production contract and it tells you whether their thinking fits your game before you commit months. Compare candidates on the full directory, and read how to outsource game design for how the work is scoped and briefed.

Frequently asked questions

What does a game design outsourcing studio do?

It decides how a game works: systems and economies, progression and difficulty curves, combat and encounter design, level layouts, and the documentation that lets engineers and artists build the same game. Some studios also prototype in-engine so a system can be felt rather than argued about. 193 of the 517 studios in this directory tag game design as a service.

Should I outsource game design at all?

Outsource design when you need a skill or a perspective you do not have — a systems designer for an economy, a level designer for a genre nobody on the team has shipped, or an outside review of why a build is not landing. Keep design in house when it defines the game's identity and changes weekly, because that work needs conversation rather than a brief. Most teams buy design as consulting first and production ownership only after that works.

How much does game design outsourcing cost?

Typical market rates run roughly $50-90 per hour for a mid-level game designer and $90-200 for a senior or lead, and consulting is often sold as a day rate rather than hourly. Those are editorial market ranges rather than quotes from listed studios. A paid audit of one to two weeks is the standard low-risk entry point, because it produces written recommendations you can judge before committing to a production contract.

What is the difference between game design and level design?

Game design sets the rules: what the player can do, how systems interact, how difficulty and reward curve over time. Level design applies those rules to space and pacing: where the player goes, what they meet, and in what order. A systems designer and a level designer are usually different people with different portfolios, so hire against the specific problem rather than the general title.

Which studios offer game design and art under one contract?

Full-production studios and mid-size multi-discipline shops are the ones that reliably cover both, because they keep designers and artists on the same bench. The benefit is that the designer and the artist resolve a question directly rather than through you. The cost is that you accept their weaker discipline alongside their stronger one. Filter this directory for game design plus 2D or 3D art to see which studios tag both.

What do game design services include?

Ask what arrives, not what the heading says. The deliverables are documents and data: a design brief or GDD, systems specs with the actual numbers in them (economy tables, progression curves, combat maths), level layouts and encounter plans, and sometimes a working prototype of one system so you can play the maths instead of reading it. A consulting engagement delivers a written audit of the build you already have instead. What is usually excluded, and worth naming in the quote: implementing any of it, the art that dresses it, balancing after launch, and how many revision passes the price covers.

Why Use Our Curated Lists?

Hand-checked Listings
Every company is researched and checked by hand before it goes on the list, and its contact details are published in full.
Generated From Live Data
This list is built from the directory itself, not hand-maintained, so a studio that updates or removes its profile is reflected here.
Transparent Ordering
Featured partners appear first and are always labeled. Everything else is ordered by profile completeness, so detailed, up-to-date profiles rank higher.
