A game art outsourcing studio produces the visual assets your game ships with: characters, environments, props, UI, concept art, and the 3D models behind all of it. Some studios are 2D-only and live in concept and illustration; others are 3D pipelines built around modeling, texturing, and look-dev. The studios on this list cover 2D, 3D, or both, and you can open any portfolio before you reach out.

The single most important thing to check is style match. An art studio that nails realistic PBR characters may be wrong for a hand-drawn 2D platformer, and the reverse is just as true. Ask to see work in your target style, not just their best overall pieces, and ask which artists made it, since freelance churn means last year's reel may not reflect who is on the bench today. If a studio cannot show recent work in your style, treat the engagement as a bet, not a sure thing.

How to brief and price game art

Vague art briefs are the main cause of cost overruns. Bring reference images, a clear deliverable list, technical specs (poly budgets, texture sizes, target engine), and a defined number of revision rounds. Most quotes include two or three rounds; extra iteration costs more. Run a small paid test asset before committing to a full package so you can judge quality and turnaround on something real. The test also shows whether their files arrive clean and ready to drop into your engine, which matters more than a pretty render.

Pick a pricing model early. A fixed package suits a defined set of assets you do not expect to redesign; hourly suits concept exploration and anything still in flux. Either way, get IP assignment in writing so the art transfers to you on payment, sign a mutual NDA before sharing unreleased designs, and confirm the studio has the rights to any brushes, scans, or stock textures baked into deliverables.

Real market rates per hour: 2D art runs $25-40 entry, $40-75 mid, and $75-150 senior. 3D art runs $30-50 entry, $50-100 mid, and $100-200 senior. Animation, which many art studios also offer, runs $35-55 entry, $55-100 mid, and $100-180 senior. As a rough package benchmark, an indie mobile art set (character sprites, environment tiles, UI) lands around $3,000-5,000 from a budget studio and $8,000-15,000 from a mid-range one.

2D shop, 3D pipeline, or one studio for both

The split matters more than most buyers expect, because the two disciplines are different businesses. In this directory 243 studios list 3D art, 146 list 2D, and only 114 list both, so if your game needs concept art that becomes models — the normal path for characters — a single studio covering both saves you a handoff where style usually leaks. If your game is one or the other, a specialist is the better bet: a 2D-only shop lives in illustration and will out-draw a generalist, and a 3D pipeline studio has the retopology, texturing, and look-dev roles a hybrid team spreads thin.

Think one step past the static asset, too. If the characters need to move, decide now who animates them, because a model built without the rig in mind gets rebuilt later. 84 of the art studios here also list animation, which keeps model and motion under one roof; when the animation is most of the work, hire from the dedicated game animation outsourcing studios list instead and give them the rig requirements before modeling starts. If your budget is indie-sized, the indie game art studios list narrows this page to teams of 1-50 that take small orders without volume minimums.

Where game art outsourcing goes wrong

The failures repeat, and most of them are set up in the first two weeks. The common ones, with the fix attached:

  • Approving renders instead of assets. A beauty render hides topology, texel density, and scale problems that only show in-engine. Review every delivery inside your engine, at game camera distance, before you sign it off.
  • Buying the showreel, getting the bench. Reels are cut from years of contracts by artists who may be gone. Ask who will actually be on your project and to see their recent work specifically.
  • No working files until the end. Get layered PSDs and source scene files with every milestone, not at final delivery. If the relationship ends early, flattened exports are worth a fraction of what you paid.
  • Style drift across batches. Batch one matches the reference and batch four quietly does not. Fix it with a style guide the studio signs off on, and a standing rule that the first asset of each new type gets approved before the rest are produced.
  • Slow feedback on your side. A studio that waits four days for notes rebooks its artists elsewhere, and your slots go with them. Name one owner for art feedback and commit to a turnaround before the contract starts.

Region drives most of the price gap. Eastern Europe and Latin America offer strong art at mid rates with a few hours of daily overlap for US and EU teams, which keeps feedback loops tight. South and Southeast Asia sit at the low end but usually mean a one-day lag on reviews, so plan async handoffs and detailed written notes. Western studios are at the top end and rarely worth it unless you need same-time-zone collaboration or a very specific high-fidelity look.

Budget 10 to 20 percent of project time for art direction, reviews, and integration on top of the production hours themselves, since unmanaged art drifts off-brief fast. For full pricing examples see our cost guide, or browse the full directory to filter art studios by style, engine, and country.

Market rates & directory snapshot

Two quick reference points before you shortlist: what studios charge per hour by discipline, and how the directory breaks down by region and service. The rates come from our published game outsourcing costs guide (or estimate your own with the rate calculator); the studio counts are first-party figures from our August 2026 directory of 437 studios across 56 countries.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it usually cost to outsource game art

Typical market rates per hour are $25-40 entry, $40-75 mid, and $75-150 senior for 2D art, and $30-50, $50-100, and $100-200 for 3D. Region sets most of the gap. As a package benchmark, an indie art set of character sprites, environments, and UI runs roughly $3,000-5,000 from a budget studio and $8,000-15,000 from a mid-range one.

Which external studios provide art and engineering for AAA games?

Large multi-service vendors such as Keywords Studios, Virtuos, PTW, and Room 8 Group cover art and engineering together at AAA scale, while mid-size specialists usually go deeper on one. Of the 441 studios in this directory, 243 list 3D art and 210 list programming. Filter for both, then ask which specific parts of a shipped AAA title the studio actually made.

How do I pick an art studio for my style?

Ask to see portfolio work in your exact target style, not just their best overall pieces, and confirm which artists produced it. Then commission a small paid test asset before any full package to judge quality and turnaround on real work.

What should a game art brief include?

Reference images, a clear deliverable list, technical specs like poly budgets and texture sizes, the target engine, and the number of revision rounds. Most quotes include two or three rounds; anything beyond that usually costs extra.

Why Use Our Curated Lists?

Hand-checked Listings
Every company is researched and checked by hand before it goes on the list, and its contact details are published in full.
Generated From Live Data
This list is built from the directory itself, not hand-maintained, so a studio that updates or removes its profile is reflected here.
Transparent Ordering
Featured partners appear first and are always labeled. Everything else is ordered by profile completeness, so detailed, up-to-date profiles rank higher.
