Best Game Development Studios for Outsourcing Character Animation (2026)
As of 2 November 2026, 53 game development studios in this directory name character animation as a service line, including Starloop Studios, Technicolor Games and Kevuru Games. The work splits in two: gameplay animation, meaning clips an engine blends at runtime, and cinematic animation, meaning directed shots for cutscenes and trailers. Rigging sits under both and is often quoted separately. Studios that publish prices start around $100 for one short 2D clip and $150 to $200 for one short 3D clip; the table below links each figure. Each card gives the studio's city, team size, founding year and main services. Membership comes from the specialty tags on each listing, checked against the studio's own site or claimed listing. Featured listings sit at the top of the list and are labelled; the rest follow the directory's score.

How We Select
Gameplay or cinematic character animation
Decide which one you are buying before you compare reels. Gameplay animation is modular: locomotion, combat, traversal and reactions that the engine assembles in an order nobody can predict, so every clip has to blend into the next and read from the player camera. Cinematic animation is linear, with a fixed camera and one correct playback, and it is judged the way film is. The craft overlaps and the deliverables do not. Gameplay work ships as clips plus engine setup; cinematic work ships as sequences, often with camera and lighting attached. A beautiful linear reel says very little about whether a run cycle will feel right under player input.

Rigging: who builds it and who signs it off
Animators work on top of a rig, so a rig built to the wrong skeleton, or without the controls your style needs, wastes the budget that follows it. Ask whether the studio animates on your rig or builds its own, and whether that rig imports cleanly into your engine and matches your skeleton hierarchy. Expect it as its own line on the quote. Studios that publish prices list a 3D character rig at anywhere from $80 to $3,000 and up, and SunStrike says non-humanoid rigs cost more and are quoted after a rig review. If two vendors are involved, have the animation studio sign off the rig before anyone animates a single clip.
What to send for a character animation quote
Quotes swing widely on the same brief, because a run cycle can mean twenty frames of loop or a full directional set with starts, stops and turns. Naming the exact clips removes most of that. Send this:
- The clip list, with counts and approximate lengths. SunStrike's guide says a casual character may need eight clips and an action hero thirty or more.
- The rig or skeleton spec, or the model if you need a rig built.
- Reference video for style and weight, with a note on what you want from each one.
- Your engine and version, the frame rate clips ship at, and any limit on bone count or clip memory.
- Who wires clips into the state machine or blend tree. SunStrike quotes blend setup and integration testing as separate lines, so check what a price leaves out.
- How many revision rounds each clip gets, and who on your team signs off.
Affordable character animation for mobile and casual games
Mobile and casual work is the cheap end of this market, because it usually runs on 2D skeletal rigs or short 3D loops rather than motion capture. The published starting points are about $100 to $300 for a simple or short 2D clip at RocketBrush and Pixune, $100 to $300 for a 2D rig at Pixune, and $1,200 to $4,000 for a set of 12 to 20 clips at SunStrike, which says it works within mobile budgets. NipsApp lists 2D and 3D animation at $15 an hour on its home page. Multiply by your clip list before you compare, and ask for animation running in a mobile build rather than a rendered reel. Those names are who publishes a number, not a recommendation. If your game is 2D, the 2D Spine animation studios list is narrower, and the indie game studios list covers smaller teams of every discipline, so check each one for animation.
We found no published data on what buyers paid for character animation, so the table below shows what each studio advertises, with its source. The rest of the art budget is in how much it costs to outsource game art, and broader animation scope questions are in the game animation outsourcing answers.

What each studio advertises, not what a buyer paid. Units differ: RocketBrush prices its 3D line per cycle and gives no unit for its 2D line, Pixune prices per cycle, Kevuru Games lists by project type, and NipsApp prices per asset or deliverable, so ask what one price buys. RocketBrush calls its figures its standard rates and dates them May 2025, and SunStrike calls its own indicative. Two more published floors: Game-Ace starts at €3,500 for a complete 3D character rig with keyframe animation, and RetroStyle Games starts at $500 for small, simple 2D animations. Whimsy Games labels $150-600 per 2D Spine clip and $400-1,500 per rigged 3D clip as market rates.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best game development studios for outsourcing character animation?
The 53 studios on this list name character animation as a service line on their own site or claimed listing, as of 2 November 2026. Studios on it include Starloop Studios, Technicolor Games and Kevuru Games. Which is best depends on the job, and we do not rate them: a studio that delivers blended gameplay loops may be thin at cinematic shots. Ask for a locomotion set and a combat set running in an engine, plus a rig the studio built. Then run a paid test on one real clip before you commit to the full list. The order here reflects paid tier and a score for size, age and profile completeness, not animation quality.
How much does it cost to outsource character animation?
Studios that publish prices list about $100 to $1,500 for one 2D clip and $150 to $2,500 for one 3D clip, depending on length and polish. A full motion set of 12 to 20 clips is $1,200 to $4,000 at SunStrike, and a 3D character animation set is $2,000 to $7,000 at Kevuru Games. A rig is usually a separate line, at $80 to $3,000 and up for 3D and $100 to $2,400 for 2D. Cinematic work costs more: Pixune lists $10,000 to $30,000 a minute for 3D. These are advertised prices from the vendors named, not what buyers paid.
What does character animation cost for a mobile or casual game?
Budget per clip and multiply by your list. RocketBrush lists $100 to $300 for a simple 2D clip and Pixune lists the same for a 2-4 second cycle, with a 2D rig at $100 to $300 at Pixune. SunStrike's guide says a casual character may need eight clips, and it quotes $100 to $500 per short clip with one revision round. So one simple 2D character with a rig and eight clips comes to about $900 to $2,700 at Pixune's figures, as our own arithmetic rather than a quote. Add in-engine setup, which is often a separate line. Ask to see the work running in a mobile build.
What should I send a studio to get a character animation quote?
Send the clip list with counts and approximate lengths, the rig or skeleton spec, reference video for style and weight, and your engine and frame rate. State who wires clips into the state machine or blend tree, and how many revision rounds each clip gets. A run cycle can mean twenty frames of loop or a full directional set with starts, stops and turns, and that gap is why quotes on a loose brief swing so widely. With a named clip list, most studios can quote per clip or per set, which moves the estimating risk onto them and makes three quotes comparable.
