What Are the Alternatives to Freelance Marketplaces for Hiring Game Studios?

Four alternatives cover most hiring. Specialist studio directories list studios you contact directly, with no commission taken on the work. Co-development studios give you a named team under one contract. Regional studio associations and the business floors at GDC and Gamescom reach studios that do not chase marketplace listings. Publisher vendor lists travel by referral from producers who have used the studio. Marketplaces suit a single asset or a short task; a studio suits anything with a schedule. As of 18 October 2026, this directory lists 533 studios you can contact directly.

Studios listed here that take this work include Revolution Software, Sickhead Games, Digital Arrow and Fox3D Consulting.

When is hiring a freelancer the right call?

Hire a freelancer when the work is one person's job, has a clear finish line, and does not need to survive a handover: a character concept set, a shader, a trailer edit, a batch of sound effects. Freelancers cost less per hour than a studio because you are not paying for producers, internal review or bench, and they start faster because there is no contract cycle. What you take on in exchange is the management, plus the risk that one person's illness or better-paid offer stops the work. For anything with dependencies between disciplines, that management cost usually exceeds the saving.

What does a studio give you that a freelance marketplace cannot?

Continuity, internal review and paperwork. A studio can cover a sick artist from its own bench, has a lead who checks work before it reaches you, and signs one contract covering IP assignment, NDAs and confidentiality for everyone who touches the project. It also carries the disciplines around the work: a studio delivering animation has riggers and technical artists to fix what breaks in engine. A marketplace gives you a person and an escrow account. When work spans several people or several months, the coordination a studio absorbs internally is the thing you are actually buying.

How do you compare a marketplace quote with a studio quote?

Rebuild both as cost per finished, accepted deliverable rather than cost per hour. A freelance hourly rate excludes review, revision management, integration support and the hours you spend coordinating, and those hours are yours. A studio rate wraps a producer and an internal review pass into the number. Ask both sides for the same scope broken into the same line items, with the number of revision rounds stated, and ask what happens when a deliverable is rejected. The gap between the two headline rates usually narrows once revision rounds and your own coordination time are priced in.

How is a studio directory different from a freelance marketplace?

A directory publishes listings and gets out of the way: you contact the studio directly, negotiate directly and pay the studio directly, with no escrow account and no commission on the work. A marketplace intermediates, holding funds, taking a percentage and ranking providers by its own activity metrics. The trade-off is that a directory carries no transaction history, so there is no rating to lean on and you run your own checks. On this site the listings are hand-compiled rather than audited, and paid listings sort above free ones, which is why the order is a starting shortlist rather than a verdict.

How do you shortlist studios without a marketplace rating?

Filter on capability first: service, engine, platform, then team size against the size of your order. Four or five studios usually survive that. Then run the checks a rating cannot fake, which are shipped titles you can confirm in the game credits, an entity that has traded for more than three years, a named team free for your dates, and one past client willing to take an unscheduled call. Send all of them the same written brief and watch who replies with questions about the asset list rather than a rate card. Then pay two of them for a short pilot.

Small studios that take scoped projects

195 of the 533 studios listed here are teams of 1 to 50, the ones most likely to quote the kind of package a freelancer would otherwise take on. Contact any of them directly; this directory takes no commission on the work.
