Game Audio Outsourcing

50 studios in this directory offer game audio. Below: the four jobs that sit under "audio", why implementation is the part teams forget to budget, how the work is priced, and what to hold back until you have heard a test.

50 studios
Direct contact, no middleman

Game audio splits into four jobs that are often quoted as one. Sound design creates the effects library: weapons, footsteps, UI, ambience, creature vocalizations. Music composition writes the score, which for games usually means adaptive or layered stems rather than linear tracks. Voice covers casting, direction, recording and editing, plus the pipeline for getting thousands of lines named, cut and delivered. Implementation wires all of it into the game through Wwise, FMOD or an engine-native system so it responds to gameplay state.

Implementation is the line item teams underestimate. A folder of beautiful WAV files is not audio in a game; it is raw material. Somebody has to build the mix, set up the buses, write the RTPC and switch logic, handle occlusion and reverb zones, and keep memory and voice counts inside budget on the lowest target platform. If your quote does not name who does that work, you have not priced the job.

How to scope a game audio package

Audio scope is measured in assets and minutes, not in vibes. Before asking for a quote, count what you actually need and state the technical envelope.

  • Number of distinct SFX, and how many are one-shots versus loops or variation sets
  • Minutes of music, and whether it is linear, layered or fully adaptive — adaptive costs multiples of linear for the same runtime
  • Line count for voice, number of characters, and languages, since VO scales with both
  • Middleware and version: Wwise, FMOD, or engine-native, and who holds the licence
  • Target platform memory and voice-count budget, plus loudness standard for each platform
  • Whether you are buying a full buyout of the music or a licence, and for which territories and terms

How game audio is priced

Sound design is usually quoted per asset or as a package for a defined library, music per minute of finished score or as a project fee, voice per line or per recorded hour with separate direction and studio costs, and implementation hourly. Mixed models are normal, and a single project can carry all four.

Typical market rates for audio work, per hour by seniority:

  • Entry: $30-50 per hour
  • Mid: $50-100 per hour
  • Senior: $100-200 per hour

Region moves these numbers more than seniority does. The top of each range is normally North America, the UK, and Western Europe; the middle is Eastern Europe and Latin America; the bottom is South and Southeast Asia. These are market ranges rather than figures from our listings — studios quote their own numbers, and most will not put one in writing until they have seen a brief.

Two commercial terms deserve more attention than the rate. First, rights: know whether you are buying the music outright or licensing it, because a licence that does not cover trailers, streaming or a later platform will cost you again at the worst moment. Second, stems: ask for delivered stems and session files, not just the bounced master, so you can re-mix later without re-hiring.

Where audio contracts go wrong

  • Implementation was never scoped, so a finished asset library sits unused while an engineer improvises the mix.
  • Music was licensed rather than bought out, and the licence does not cover the trailer or a console port.
  • Voice was recorded before the script locked, and the pickup session costs more than the original one.
  • Loudness and platform mix targets were never stated, so the game fails a compliance check on submission.
  • Naming conventions for thousands of VO files were invented late, and the integration pass becomes a manual sort.

Ask for a short paid test on one scene: a handful of SFX plus a 30-second music cue, implemented in your build if implementation is in scope. Compare studios on the best game audio companies list.

Audio outsourcing: common questions

How does audio outsourcing work for a AAA game?

Large titles usually split the work: one studio or composer for music, a sound design team for the effects library, a separate voice pipeline for casting and recording, and either an in-house or contracted audio programmer for implementation in Wwise or FMOD. The audio director stays client-side and owns the mix and the creative brief across all vendors.

How much does game audio outsourcing cost?

Sound design is typically quoted per asset or as a library package, music per finished minute, voice per line or recorded hour, and implementation hourly. Typical market rates for audio work run roughly $30-50 per hour entry-level, $50-100 mid-level and $100-200 senior, with region accounting for most of the variation.

Does game audio outsourcing include implementation?

Often not, and it is the most common gap in an audio quote. Implementation means wiring assets into Wwise, FMOD or an engine-native system, building the mix and buses, setting up parameters and reverb zones, and staying inside platform memory and voice-count budgets. Confirm in writing whether it is included or billed separately.

Should I buy out or license game music?

A buyout transfers the music to you and costs more upfront. A licence is cheaper but scoped, and licences frequently exclude trailers, streaming, or later platform releases. If you expect marketing use or a console port, price the buyout, or negotiate those uses into the licence before recording rather than after.

How do I test a game audio studio?

Commission a short paid test covering one scene: a small set of sound effects plus a 30-second music cue, implemented in your build if implementation is in scope. Judge it in-game with your mix and platform targets, not as an isolated listen, and note how the studio handled a round of direction.
