Game Animation Outsourcing
97 studios in this directory offer game animation. Below: the difference between gameplay and cinematic work, why the rig decides the schedule, how animation is priced, and how to review a delivery without being fooled by a good camera angle.
Animation outsourcing covers gameplay animation, cinematics, motion capture cleanup and rigging, and those are genuinely different skills. Gameplay animation is engineering-adjacent: locomotion sets, attack cycles, transitions, root motion, blend timing, and everything that has to feel right under player input at 60 frames per second. Cinematic animation is closer to film: staging, acting, camera, and long unbroken performances where nobody is pressing a button.
Studios that excel at cinematics sometimes deliver gameplay sets that look beautiful in isolation and feel wrong in the game, because responsiveness was never the brief. If your need is gameplay, ask to see animation running in an engine with a controller attached, not a rendered reel.
The rig decides the schedule
Almost every animation delay traces back to the rig. If the studio animates on their rig and you retarget to yours, expect drift, foot sliding and finger poses that need fixing. If they animate on your rig, they need it early, documented, and stable, and every change you make to it invalidates work in flight.
Decide this before the contract: whose rig, who maintains it, and what happens when it changes. Then send the studio a locked test scene with your character, your ground plane and your camera so the first delivery can be judged in the right conditions.
- Rig ownership, version, and change-control process
- Frame rate, root motion or in-place, and how transitions are authored
- Naming convention for clips, and the export format your pipeline ingests
- Whether the studio delivers into your engine or hands over FBX for you to integrate
- Mocap source: do they shoot it, do you supply raw data, or is it keyframed from scratch
- Revision rounds per clip and what counts as a revision rather than a re-brief
How animation is priced
Gameplay animation is usually quoted per clip or per animation set, since a locomotion set is a known quantity. Cinematics are quoted per second of finished animation, because a second of acting costs far more than a second of walk cycle. Mocap cleanup is often hourly, and rigging is either a fixed price per character or hourly for complex or facial rigs.
Typical market rates for animation, per hour by seniority:
- Entry: $35-55 per hour
- Mid: $55-100 per hour
- Senior: $100-180 per hour
Region moves these numbers more than seniority does. The top of each range is normally North America, the UK, and Western Europe; the middle is Eastern Europe and Latin America; the bottom is South and Southeast Asia. These are market ranges rather than figures from our listings — studios quote their own numbers, and most will not put one in writing until they have seen a brief.
How to review an animation delivery
- Review in your engine, on your character, with your controller mapping. A playblast hides input latency.
- Check the transitions between clips, not only the clips. Most gameplay animation problems live at the seams.
- Watch for foot sliding at your actual movement speed, which is the most common retarget artifact.
- For cinematics, check silhouette readability at the real camera distance rather than the animator's working camera.
- Confirm clip lengths and naming match your spec before anyone starts integrating, because renaming later breaks references.
Compare studios on the best animation studios list, and pair animation with your 3D art vendor early so the rig and the mesh come from a coordinated pipeline.

Animation outsourcing: common questions
How much does game animation outsourcing cost?
Gameplay animation is usually quoted per clip or per animation set, cinematics per second of finished animation, mocap cleanup hourly, and rigging as a fixed price per character. Typical market rates for animation run roughly $35-55 per hour entry-level, $55-100 mid-level and $100-180 senior, with region driving most of the difference.
What is the difference between gameplay and cinematic animation?
Gameplay animation has to feel right under player input: locomotion sets, transitions, blend timing and root motion at a locked frame rate. Cinematic animation is closer to film, prioritising acting, staging and camera over responsiveness. Studios strong in one are not automatically strong in the other, so review the relevant type specifically.
Whose rig should an animation studio work on?
Animating directly on your rig avoids retargeting artifacts like foot sliding and broken finger poses, but requires your rig to be documented and stable, since changes invalidate work in progress. Animating on the studio rig is more flexible but adds a retarget pass. Decide and write it into the contract before work starts.
How should I review animation deliveries?
Review in your engine, on your character, with your control mapping rather than as a rendered playblast, which hides input latency. Check the transitions between clips as well as the clips themselves, and watch for foot sliding at your real movement speed. Confirm clip naming matches spec before integration begins.
